Music Production and Recording Arts Camp is a week of hands-on music production and audio engineering study! Students will learn both creative and technical skills beneficial to arranging, producing and recording with industry-standard computer software, Ableton Live. Taught by industry professionals, this course covers the basics of working in a studio environment in an exciting way. Students to create their own original art as well as capture the sounds of others.

The Eugene Rousseau Saxophone Workshop with Jarrard Harris is one of the oldest and prestigious Saxophone-specific camps in the United States. It is one of the cornerstones of the Shell Lake Arts Center. The Saxophone Camp is a dual jazz and classical saxophone immersion experiences for students.

Trombone Workshop is a fun, transformational experience aimed at increasing musicianship in any trombonist-from beginner to advanced player. It is an opportunity for middle and high school students to play and study trombone with professional trombonists Dr. Phil Ostrander and a staff of amazing trombonists from the Upper Midwest.

Jason McLean, professional musician and guitar & bass instructor provides an exciting learning environment for guitarists of all abilities. Students will be exposed to all styles and techniques of electric, acoustic, and bass guitar. Students choose an area of focus in small groups, and gather for full class jam sessions. Note reading and music theory will be areas of study during the workshop. Ability to sight-read music not required. A week of presentations and performances by faculty and guest clinicians will conclude with a special student concert.

Your unforgettable week-long drumming experience awaits! During this week you’ll develop the knowledge and skills that are the building blocks of playing percussion. You’ll also expand your knowledge of how to use these building blocks to become a more creative and expressive drummer while gaining awareness about how your playing fits the style of any song. This camp is intended to develop skills and abilities to perform a variety of styles (jazz, Latin, rock, etc.).

Take your piano-playing skills to the next level! From beginners to advanced pianists, you will learn more at this camp than you ever thought possible. This camp includes the opportunity for students to play on state of the art digital pianos graciously loaned to the Shell Lake Arts Center by Schmitt Music. Campers will receive individualized and group instruction daily, with a focus on both solo and ensemble performance. Each student receives a private lesson daily . In addition, students will participate in a studio class where they will perform and provide critique for each other.

Do you like to take pictures with your digital camera or phone and would like to get better photographs?

Musical Theatre Camp is a chance for actors, singers, and dancers to create a musical performance from start to finish within a short period of time. This is great training for what summer stock theatre looks like. If you want to build music theatre skills and techniques or you simply enjoy performing, this is the camp for you! We move fast and work as hard as we play!

For more than 55 years, the Master Teachers of the Shell Lake Arts Center Jazz Camps have launched the careers for some of America’s most acclaimed young jazz musicians: Ethan Iverson (The Bad Plus), Geoff Keezer (Art Blakey, David Sanborn), Lyle Mays (Pat Metheny Group), Bill Evans Saxophone (Miles Davis, Randy Brecker), Trumpeter Byron Stripling (Count Basie, Woody Herman). Tap into your creative potential and develop a concrete strategy to position you, the songwriter, where you want to be. By the end of the camp, you’ll have a songwriting family with a musical toolbox to serve you throughout your career.

Spend an exciting week making your own video content and learning the basics of digital filmmaking. You’ll write your own story, record it using other actors/campers, and edit it using Adobe Premiere Pro. Video Production Camp will introduce you to camera and editing techniques, as well as principles of lighting, sound design, and story development. Working individually or in teams, students will complete a final video project that will be shown at the a Red Carpet Premiere on Friday afternoon. Projects will then be added to our collection of projects completed in years before on Youtube.

Jazz Combo and Improvisation camp differs from Jazz Band camp in that the ensembles are smaller and may feature only one student per instrument.  The focus of this camp is on small-group performance practices and a more in-depth exploration of improvisation.  Whether you're just beginning your improvisation journey or have years of expeirence, this camp is for YOU!

Join us for a week of eclectic strings with local String legend Randy Sabien. In conjunction with our Jazz Combo Camp, you will learn and improve your skills in improvisation, jazz string literature, and techniques.

Concert Band Camp is for you! All students can come together and share in a variety of activities that are fun and rewarding. Challenging music, interacting with many people, and learning from Master Teachers and fellow campers will make this a memory you’ll treasure forever. Many campers return summer after summer to continue their musical and personal growth. You belong here and find your people!

This course gives the intermediate to advanced trumpet student, performer, and pedagogue the opportunity to play and discuss trumpet all day and every day for a week with Robert Baca. All attributes needed to build musicality and “chops” will be discussed along with performance applications for orchestra, concert band, and jazz ensemble. Camp content will include private lessons, group study, and trumpet ensemble performance.

Painting and Drawing Camp offers visual artists the opportunity to set personal goals in the creation of their artwork and receive one-on-one instruction in a small group setting. It doesn’t matter what your preferred media is, this camp allows the opportunity to both improve your existing techniques and skills but also to experiment with other materials and techniques throughout the week. This camp is designed for the inquisitive artist–The more ideas and questions you come to camp with, the more you’ll grow as a visual artist!

The Middle School Choir Camp is an exciting new Shell Lake Arts Center opportunity to sing in choir. Students in this camp will learn diverse music from all around the world, develop music literacy skills, explore various interests such as classroom instruments and movement activities, all while singing with other students who REALLY want to sing!

The Show Choir Camp provides an outstanding opportunity for participants to gain experience in singing, dancing, and stage presence. By working with master teachers, students will a 20 minute performance . They will learn five songs of varied styles. The Show Choir Camp is appropriate for all abilities–even if you’ve never been in show choir or choir! By the end of the week, you will gain more skills and abilities than you ever imagined. You will form life long friendships with the students attending camp.

Whether you’re just starting out studying jazz, or are an accomplished, passionate performer continuing your studies, this camp is for you! All levels of experience are accepted-from beginner to advanced. Students receive a personal private placement screening on Sunday when they arrive in Shell Lake. They are matched with others of the same abilities and technical skills.

AP Art & Design Boot Camp provides the opportunity to express yourself and develop your own artistic process while surrounded by other creative individuals. In this safe space, with positive and constructive mentorship from an AP Audit approved instructor, you can build your confidence and start the journey of developing your AP Portfolio. Art & Design offers the freedom to work in any media. Students will have access to some traditional 2-D and 3-D materials and may also bring along personal materials and digital devices.

For many years, the Rock Band Camp has been providing students an opportunity to develop their skills both as individual performers and as members of a band. Students will work with other students of similar abilities and skills to create a band. Many of the students they will work with will become friends for life.
