The Princess Bride is a much-loved 1987 fantasy-adventure-comedy. Directed by Rob Reiner, the film refuses to take itself too seriously. Adapted by William Goldman from his novel of the same name, it tells the story of an intrepid farmhand named Westley, accompanied by
companions he meets along the way, who must rescue Princess Buttercup, his true love, from the evil Prince Humperdinck. Like its source, the film’s post-modern metafictional structure
presents the story as a book being read by a grandfather to his sick grandson. The Princess Bride’s wonderful cast includes Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, André the Giant, Chris Sarandon, Christopher Guest, Wallace Shawn, Peter Falk, Fred Savage, Billy
Crystal and Carol Kane. William Goldman’s tale, envisioned on the screen by Rob Reiner has grown to become a cult classic. The film is oft-quoted with many quirky but memorable characters and evokes two of Reiner’s favorite themes: love can prevail over hate and small- mindedness and a person’s worth cannot be determined by his or her appearance or
background.
