DESCRIPTION:Hugo is Martin Scorsese’s delightful answer to his daughter\, Francesca‘s\, complaint that she could never watch any of his films. Based upon the equally delightful book\, the Legend of Hugo Cabret\, Hugo is a master class in special effects artistry. Set primarily in Paris‘s Montparnasse train station in the 1930s\, the film tells the story of orphan Hugo Cabret\, who lives within the walls of the station and maintains the station’s clocks. When he meets the goddaughter of the station’s grumpy toy shop owner\, Hugo begins to discover the answers to his troubling past. An avid film buff and historian\, Scorsese weaves in loving homage’s to some of the earliest films and their makers\, building a compelling case for the importance of film preservation and celebrating of film culture.

SUMMARY:Film Series - Princess Bride
DESCRIPTION:The Princess Bride is a much-loved 1987 fantasy-adventure-comedy.  Directed by Rob Reiner\, the film refuses to take itself too seriously. Adapted by William Goldman from his novel of the same name\, it tells the story of an intrepid farmhand named Westley\, accompanied bycompanions he meets along the way\, who must rescue Princess Buttercup\, his true love\, from the evil Prince Humperdinck. Like its source\, the film’s post-modern metafictional structurepresents the story as a book being read by a grandfather to his sick grandson. The Princess Bride’s wonderful cast includes Cary Elwes\, Robin Wright\, Mandy Patinkin\, André the Giant\, Chris Sarandon\, Christopher Guest\, Wallace Shawn\, Peter Falk\, Fred Savage\, BillyCrystal and Carol Kane. William Goldman’s tale\, envisioned on the screen by Rob Reiner has grown to become a cult classic. The film is oft-quoted with many quirky but memorable characters and evokes two of Reiner’s favorite themes: love can prevail over hate and small- mindedness and a person’s worth cannot be determined by his or her appearance orbackground.

Learn and discuss basic filmmaking techniques and thematic/symbolic methods used by filmmakers to enhance meaning. \n\n\n\nTickets available at the door – Walk-ins welcome! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nArguably the greatest film of all time\, Citizen Kane will be the final film of the series. When he was only 25\, Orson Wells co-wrote\, produced\, directed\, and starred in this classic 1941 film that has repeatedly been upheld as a masterpiece of American cinema. Revolutionary in its time\, the film begins at the end with the death of its title character\, and then flashing back to various periods in the protagonist’s life\, gradually moves forward to where it began. The plot\, loosely based upon the life of William Randolph Hearst\, follows Kane from his early childhood when the deed to an abandoned mine is left as payment by a boarder at his mother’s boarding house. When the mine becomes one of the richest gold mines in existence\, we follow Kane through his life\, raised by a banker-guardian\, as he becomes one of the wealthiest men alive.Following the tremendous Broadway success of his Mercury Theatre and the 1938 radio broadcast “The War of the Worlds”\, Welles came to Hollywood and signed a contract with RKO Pictures in 1939. Almost unheard of at the time\, the boy genius was given total freedom todevelop his own story\, to use his own cast and crew\, and have final cut privileges on the film. Asa result\, Welles gave us Citizen Kane\, a film that creates so many film conventions and does so many things so well\, it is sure to live on as a cultural touchstone and\, to many\, as thegreatest film ever made.
