The Shell Lake Arts Center is partnering with the Wisconsin School Music Association for the WSMA State Honors Music Project Boot Camp-Senior Edition. It is intended to help students prepare for the rigorous auditions that are required for participation in the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) High School State Honors Project held in June (UW-Green Bay camp) and October in conjunction with the Wisconsin State Music Conference.
In previous years, it is noted that there is an under-representation of students from the Northwest region of our state.
When I attended the WSMA State Honors Music Project concerts last year and viewed the programs, I realized that there is an under-representation of students from the Northwest region of our state. As I reflected, access, inclusion and equity came to mind. I believe that when the village comes together to educate the child, great things can happen.
The philosophy of this program is quite simple :
- To assist students in how to prepare for an audition.
- To increase student access and participation in the WSMA State Honors Music Project from our region.
- To utilize master teachers to help students prepare for and complete a successful audition.
- To enrich student’s musical lives
To begin, this program is being endorsed by WSMA and we are pleased to be supporting this awesome program. In addition, working in conjunction with master teacher Renee Rademaker, WMEA Board Member, we would like to share with band and choir students strategies to help them prepare for their auditions in the areas of scales, etudes, and sight reading. In addition, we’d like to address resources that they can use to prepare, and also include how to deal with performance anxiety and stress.
There will be three sessions for students to attend. The first two will be preparation in masterclasses and discussions. The third session will be an opportunity for students to complete a mock audition and receive feedback from a master teacher. In conjunction with WSMA, we intend to provide resources that will strengthen a student’s ability to do well in their audition.
The dates are:
Saturday December 10, 2022 from 9am-1pm
Tuesday, January 10, 2023 from 4:30pm-8:30pm
Saturday, January 21, 2022 (individually scheduled mock auditions)
The cost for these sessions will be $20, Students are encouraged to attend all three or only the mock audition if they wish.
