About
Trumpet Workshop is designed to build lifelong skills, techniques, and personal enjoyment. A stellar faculty of active players, composers and teachers who are passionate about showing students the steps to attaining a high level of playing. Our Master Teachers love to share their personal stories, anecdotes, and tips on how you can become the best player possible.
Through the study of the trumpet and developing a mindset necessary for success, students, learn, grow and become better. All dimensions needed to build skills, musicality and endurance will be explored. In addition, diverse skills needed to play for orchestral, concert band, and jazz ensembles will be studied. Camp content will include private lessons, group study, and trumpet ensemble performances.
Emphasis will be placed on addressing challenges faced by all participants. This camp is an excellent opportunity for directors and teachers who do not play personally play the trumpet to observe trumpet pedagogy. This camp provides multiple practical and motivational ideas that students can take back to their schools and individual performances!

Meet the Instructors

About the Program Director
Robert Baca is Professor of Trumpet and Director of Jazz Studies at the all undergraduate University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. His performance background includes countless performances in both classical and commercial areas including the Milwaukee Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra and the Phillip Brunelle “Plymouth Music Series Orchestra” as well as a past member of the popular radio ensemble for Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.” He has toured with Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rich, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Blood Sweat and Tears and numerous others as well as performing over countless Broadway shows and hundreds of recording sessions in Minneapolis, Indianapolis, and Chicago. He has been employed at the Orpheum and State Theatre in the theatre district of Minneapolis for all concerts and Broadway Shows for the last 29 years. As a soloist, Robert has performed in China, London, Costa Rica and Europe as well as the United States.
Mr. Baca also directs the UW-Eau Claire Jazz Studies program which was recently cited in the New York Times as “one of the most well-regarded jazz studies programs in the country.” Under Mr. Baca’s direction, the UW-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble I has recorded 21 CD’s, received the Down Beat award for Jazz Ensemble eight times and been nominated for a Grammy twice. Recently, Robert conducted the National High School Honors Jazz Ensemble for the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) at their national convention in Nashville, Tennessee. Other educational highlights include serving as a faculty member of Conn-Selmer Institute, conducting numerous all-state ensembles and presenting at educational conventions. Recently he received the first, “Career Excellence in Teaching Award” presented by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and was runner-up for the “Teacher Of The Year”, UW-System Award. Mr. Baca is a past executive board member of the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) as the United States Representative as well as an advisory board member for the Edwin Franko Goldman Band.
Mr. Baca loves to help students of any age reach their whole potential through an apprentice approach. Each week students practice with Mr. Baca from 7:30-9:00 each morning and afternoon when available, receive weekly lessons, trumpet studio class, trumpet choir and brass quintet coaching as well as attending concerts in the Twin Cities. He has been happily married to his wife Jodie for over 30 years and has two children, Alec and Nicole and a dog named Chewy.
Faculty Member: Amy Schendel

Amy serves as a trumpet instructor for the St. Paul Conservatory of Music and program coordinator for the Music Across Minnesota grant program with the St. Paul Conservatory of Music. Additionally, she holds adjunct teaching positions at St. Cloud State University and the University of Northwestern in St. Paul. From 2009-2022, she served as the Associate Professor of Trumpet at the University of Iowa. As a featured guest soloist, Amy has performed with the Oregon Symphonic Band, University of Iowa Orchestra and Band, Indiana University Wind Ensemble, and Texas Woman’s University Wind Ensemble. Previous positions include Madison Symphony Orchestra, Wisconsin Brass Quintet, Tanglewood Music Festival, National Repertory Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and Spoleto Festival USA. She has experience performing with the Quad Cities Symphony, Orchestra Iowa, Eugene (OR) Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, and Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. In addition, Amy has presented and performed as a featured soloist at the International Women’s Brass Conference, the International Trumpet Guild Conference, and the Iowa BandMasters Association. She has presented chamber concerts in Munich, Dachau, Augsburg, and Berlin and has two published solo and chamber CD’s: Full Power and Uncommon Ground: Contemporary Works for Trumpet with Horn, Trombone, Piano, and Organ on MSR Classics.
Faculty Member: Quentin Volk

Quentin Volk, from Fort Collins, Colorado was a member of the Disney All-American College Band, toured on cruise ships and performed freelance trumpet work in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota while in-between classes at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Shortly before his 21st birthday, he took time off from school to perform his first national Broadway tour with the show “Cinderella,” followed by an extensive national Broadway tour of “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” then performed an eight-month Broadway-show residency in Colorado before returning to school to finish his degree. From age 14, when attending the “Trumpet Workshop” at the Shell Lake Arts Center in Shell Lake, WI https://shelllakeartscenter.org/camp/trumpet-workshop-with-robert-baca/ where he is now a faculty member, Quentin has been energized to learn and share about the trumpet in all genres, eventually making it his life’s work. He is currently the Executive Director of Eau Claire Jazz, Inc., which hosts the Eau Claire Jazz Festival https://www.eauclairejazz.com, and he enjoys freelancing in all genres and performing Broadway Shows at the Guthrie, Ordway & Orpheum Theatres. Quentin lives in St. Paul with his wife, MarLee, and their only child, a blue nose pitbull named Rex.”

Accommodations
Lodges are available for the duration of the camp session. They are supervised by a professional counseling staff on duty 24 hours each day and meals are prepared under the supervision of a state-approved dietitian.
Commuter Expectations
Commuter students are expected to remain at camp until the day’s activities are completed (Typically 9:am-8pm).
Registrations
Online registrations are accepted until the camp is full. Students may be placed on a waiting list if desired. A camp registration form is sent after payment is received. All cancellations must be made in writing and received 3 weeks in advance of the start of camp for a full refund. A $100.00 fee will be deducted from your refund. Refunds less than three weeks before camp will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
Residential Tuition
Our student tuition is $895 per student and includes instructional fees, room and board and a camp t shirt which will be worn at the final performance. Please refer to the registration materials found on our registration site at Ultracamp for complete details. A $100 down payment is due at the time of registration. The remaining balance can be paid at the time of registration or in equal monthly installments. All Tuition must be paid before arrival at camp.
Commuter Tuition
This option is for campers that want to attend our camps but not stay in our dorms, The $695 tuition covers instructional fees, a camp T-Shirt which will be worn at the final performance, meals, and evening activities. Commuters arrive for their first class by 9AM, and can be picked up any time after evening activities conclude (usually around 8pm).
Check-in / Check-out
Check in begins at 2pm on Sunday of the week your camp begins. All medical, dietary, and consent forms must be completed in UltraCamp before arriving at camp. Additional information will be emailed to you approximately 4 weeks before camp begins.
