Discover the Shell Lake Arts Center

The Shell Lake Arts Center provides premium arts and music experiences for its students and its community.

Fifty-six years ago a local music teacher recognized the need for a regional educational arts center. He believed that all students deserved to learn from master teachers and that the best learning happens in a magic setting. Thus, what is now known as the Shell Lake Arts Center was born.

The needs identified in the 1960s are as true today as they were back then. The Shell Lake Arts Center offers instruction from world-renowned instructors, encourages students of all abilities to come and learn, and is located a short walk from one of the most beautiful beaches and lakes in the upper midwest.

In 2019 the Arts Center was gifted the Erika Quam Memorial Theatre and the rich history of live productions by the Theatre in the Woods.  The 100-seat theater, converted from an old Methodist Church was host to over 90 plays, musicals, and concerts during its 29-year history. Plays written by local artists, as well as productions such as “Oliver”, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf”, and “Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten”, as well as three original musicals by Kevin McMullin: “Forests”, “The Adventures of Al”, and “Balance and Swing” are just some of the theatrical experiences provided to Shell Lake and the surrounding communities.

The addition of this unique and intimate venue, along with the pool of talented area actors and directors, opened many exciting opportunities for learning and entertainment at the Shell Lake Arts Center.

Over its long history, the Shell Lake Arts Center has welcomed students from 49 states and more than 20 countries.

Mission Element I

Accelerate Learning

With Relevant And Meaningful Courses Of Study For Youth And Adult Students Of All Ages.

The importance of art in society can’t be overstated.  We know that music and the arts are key to student development and research shows us that involvement in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skills.  Our goal is to create an environment where adult and school age students have meaningful connections, find their voices, create art, and grow and reach their full potential.

Mission Element II

STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

By Offering Diverse And Creative Opportunities That Bring Us Together.

The arts bring people together. We gather to enjoy music with our friends, be moved by a community theater play, or marvel at the uniqueness of a piece of pottery or metalwork.  Art inspires engagement and a feeling of belonging to a community.

Mission Element III

CHAMPION TEACHING

By Promoting And Providing Opportunities For Personal And Professional Growth That Builds Strong Music And Arts Education Programs.

Years of research show that arts education is closely linked to almost everything that we as a nation say we want for our children and demand from our schools: academic achievement, social and emotional development, civic engagement, and equitable opportunity.

“Shell Lake Jazz Camp was one of the most important experiences in my musical life. The faculty is absolutely top notch, and they really care that the students not only grow musically, but have a great time as well! I will always have wonderful memories about my times at Shell Lake!”

Program

Artist in Residence

Our Artist in Residence Program makes it possible for area artists to use our various venues in exchange for their work supporting Art Center programs. Their work is shared with the community.  Everyone benefits from the collaboration of a residency–the artists, our audiences, and the Arts Center.
